Simon C. Salas III, went to be with his heavenly father on July 18th, 2026. He was born in San Antonio, Texas on October 25th, 1938 to Simon Acosta Salas II and Josefina Caravajal Salas. Simon grew up in a big, close-knit family. His childhood was filled with love, faith and tradition. As the eldest, Simon was a mentor for his siblings. Growing up, he was an altar server at his local parish and a member of the Boy Scouts of America. At the age of 17, feeling called to serve his country, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corp (USMC). Simon took great pride in being a Marine, he served as a Corporal before transitioning into the Airforce. During his time in the civil service, he worked as an aircraft painter in the 433rd Airlift Wing at Kelly Air Force Base. In addition to his career in the military, Simon was a dedicated owner and operator of the family business, Aztec Fence, which was founded by his father in 1954. Simon, alongside his parents and siblings, laid the foundation of bringing quality customer service to customers on the West Side and all of San Antonio. Throughout the city, you can see Aztec’s work because the Salas family built a brand that people can trust.

Simon’s faith was the cornerstone of his life. A devout Catholic, Simon's life was rooted in prayer and service for his family and friends. He was a lifelong parishioner of St. Alphonsus Catholic Church and was active in the Guadalupanos, the Men’s Club, the Building Committee, the Knights of Columbus, ACTS, and Parish Life Ministry. Simon helped build up the community by his participation in these ministries. Beyond all this, Simon continually lived a life that preached the gospel through his actions. If anyone came to Simon asking for prayers, they would walk away knowing that he was going to be praying for them every day.

Simon loved his family, he was the kindest husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. That kindness didn't just extend to his immediate family. If anyone was in need, he was there to support them. Everywhere he went, he made a friend. Simon shared 66 loving years of marriage with his wife Elida. Some of his fondest memories were traveling the country with his family. If you were to ask Simon what he was most proud of, he would always say his family. Simon passed along his love of service to his family. He led by example, showing them to never turn away someone in need. Simon will be remembered for being a faithful servant of God and a loving grandfather and great-grandfather. Although he is no longer here on earth, we will carry him in our hearts. We take comfort in knowing that he is praying for all of us up in heaven.

Simon was preceded in death by his father, Simon A. Salas II; his mother, Josefina O. Caravajal; seven infant siblings; brother Arturo Salas; sons Larry Salas Sr., and Damian Villarreal. He is survived by his loving spouse, Elida Salas; sons, Simon G. Salas (Anita) and Michael Salas; daughter, Marina C. Ramos (Frank); daughter-in-law Susana Salas; siblings, Leo Salas (Melba), Rachel DeMars, (Joseph), Roger Salas, and Josie Lynch; grandchildren, James E. Villarreal (Eva), Larry Salas Jr. (Vanessa), Simon Steven Salas, Matthew L. Salas, Brittany R. Salas a.k.a. “Bouncer” (Elisa), Frank Ramos Jr. (Kassandra); Simone Salas, Daniel Salas, Michael Salas, Anastacia Leal (Michael); great-grandchildren, Sierra R. Salas Dunn (Christopher), Spencer L. Salas, Shiloh R. Salas, River L. Salas, and Frank Ramos III, and numerous cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.

Visitation, Vigil & Rosary Information:

Visitation will be held on Wednesday, July 29th from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at St. Alphonsus Catholic Church located at 1202 S. Zarzamora St, San Antonio, TX 78207. A vigil service and rosary will begin at 6 p.m.

Mass & Internment Information:

The funeral mass will be celebrated on Thursday, July 30th at 12 noon, with internment to follow at San Fernando Cemetery #2, with Marine Corps Honors.
