Obituary

Socorro "Cory" Benavides Herrera, born October 15th, 1926, was called home on October 26th, 2023, in San Antonio, Texas.

At 97 years old, Cory was often told she was a young 97-year-old and always loved telling people that she was almost 100.

Cory was born in Christine, Texas, and later moved to San Antonio, Texas, where she met her husband, Martin Herrera.

Cory, Martin, and their children lived on the west side of San Antonio for many years, creating the foundation of the Herrera family that would eventually grow larger as their children had families of their own.

Cory worked as a seamstress at the Finesilver Manufacturing Company, making blue jeans, and often shared memories of her days at work. Talking about those younger years in her life always made her smile.

After the passing of her husband, Cory kept busy by staying engaged in her community as a member of the St. Agnes Catholic Church Parish. She filled her days at the Senior Center and expanded her community involvement by becoming a Foster Grandparent at House of Neighborly—the same preschool several of her grandchildren attended. She cherished her time as a Foster Grandparent, forming bonds with many of the children, their parents, and her peers.

Her family and friends will significantly miss Cory's smile, silly banter, and storytelling.

Cory is preceded in death by her parents, Fortunato Benavides and Lina Rodriguez Benavides. Husband Martin Herrera, sons Frank Herrera and Martin Herrera Jr., and daughter Stella McColley. Granddaughter Nadia Michelle Herrera, grandson Alfredo Herrera, great-granddaughter Charlotte Schumacher, brothers Ramiro and Honorato, and sister Andrea.

Cory is survived by her son Alfredo Herrera (Mary) and daughter Bertha Rivera (Marcial Jr.), eight grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren, three great-great-grandchildren, and her sister Aida (Albert).

Visitation will be held on Wednesday, November 8th, from 3:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Castillo Funeral Home (520 N. General McMullen – San Antonio, TX 78228), with a Rosary at 6:00 p.m.

The funeral procession will depart from Castillo Funeral Home at 9:15 a.m. on Thursday, November 9th, leading to St. Agnes Catholic Church (804 Ruiz St. – San Antonio, TX 78207) for mass at 10:00 a.m. Interment will follow at San Fernando Cemetery #2 (746 Castroville Rd. – San Antonio, TX 78237).
