In Loving Memory
Our precious and beautiful mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, Socorro B. Van Brandt, passed away peacefully on October 20, 2026, surrounded by the love that she so freely gave throughout her 95 remarkable years of life. Born in Chicago, Illinois, she was a blessing to her family and all who had the privilege of knowing her.
Socorro devoted her life to God, her family, her church, and her work as an exceptionally talented seamstress. She was a woman of deep faith, boundless generosity, and quiet strength who always put the needs of others before her own.
Socorro is lovingly survived by her
Children: Grace (Richard), Annette (John d.), Arthur III (Joanna), James, and Daniel
Grandchildren: Brittany, Amanda, Victoria, Jeunesse, Julia, and Daniel Jr.
Great-Grandchildren: Xavier, Aria, Luna, Jack, and Miley,
who will forever cherish the love, wisdom, and beautiful memories she leaves behind.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Jose and Isabel Barriga, siblings, Gabriel Barriga, Theresa Bautista, Jesus Barriga and Josefina Silva, and husband, Arthur L. Van Brandt Jr.
Socorro was dearly loved by her extended family throughout the United States, México, and Canada. She shared a special bond with each of them, remembered every important date, and never missed an opportunity to show she cared, whether through thoughtful gifts, birthday and saint’s day cards, phone calls, or her beautiful annual Christmas card. She was always there to offer comfort during times of sorrow. We marveled at her remarkable memory, which sadly began to fade in her final years. Her thoughtfulness and devotion to family will forever be cherished.
A devout Catholic, Socorro was a faithful parishioner of St. Henry’s Church and lived each day with an unwavering devotion to God our Father and the Blessed Mother. Prayer was at the heart of her life. She prayed the Rosary throughout the day and frequently offered Masses for those who were ill or had passed away. Her faith was not simply something she practiced; it was something she lived through her kindness, generosity, humility, and compassion for others.
Socorro had a beautiful voice and sang soprano in her church choir. She gladly volunteered her time to support church fundraisers and annual festivals, and was always willing to lend a helping hand in service to her parish community.
She was also known for her wonderful cooking and baking. Her grandchildren treasured her special dishes and often requested their favorites for their birthdays. Preparing a meal was one of the many ways she expressed her love for those closest to her.
Her remarkable talents extended to crocheting, knitting, embroidery, and sewing. With extraordinary skill and loving hands, she created clothing for her daughters, sons, and granddaughters, including prom dresses and several wedding dresses. Each piece was more than a garment; it was a gift of her time, talent, and love, creating treasured keepsakes that will be remembered for generations. She also did some fine garment work for Santa Claus.
Above all, Socorro was a woman who gave selflessly and loved deeply. Even when she endured years of what others would consider unbearable pain in her legs, she rarely complained. She never wanted to burden anyone, especially her beloved children, whom she continually thanked for even the smallest acts of assistance. Her gratitude, humility, and concern for others were a testament to the beautiful spirit she carried throughout her life.
For over 95 wonderful years, she remained steadfast in her faith, devoted to her family, and committed to serving our Lord. She gave what she had, even when she had little to spare, and thought of others before herself. Her life was a living example of faith, sacrifice, perseverance, and unconditional love.
Socorro's legacy is one of faith, family, service, and a love that will never fade. Though our hearts are heavy with the pain of losing her, we find comfort in knowing that she has returned to the loving arms of our Heavenly Father and is reunited with those who went before her.
