Obituary

In Loving Memory of Sofia Alvarez Lara

                                                                                 July 28, 1950 – October 2, 2026

Sofia Alvarez Lara, age 76, passed away peacefully on October 2, 2026. A devoted wife, loving mother and grandmother, cherished sister, and faithful Catholic, Sofia lived life with humor, energy, and a personality that was unmistakably her own.

Sofia was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Juan J. Lara Sr., who passed away on February 6, 2024. Married on September 9, 1972, they shared 51 years of marriage, building a life together centered on family, love, and lasting memories. Her loved ones find comfort in the hope that she has been reunited with her husband and welcomed home by the Lord.

Born on July 28, 1950, to Elpidio Alvarez and Francisca Flores, Sofia attended Lanier High School in San Antonio, Texas. She was known for her nurturing heart, lively spirit, and outspoken nature. She never hesitated to speak her mind, no matter how unexpected her words might be. Her humor and candid personality made her unforgettable to those who knew her.

Sofia enjoyed the simple pleasures of life. She loved cats, sewing, shopping, and thrifting, as well as a good steak grilled by her husband. A true night owl, she especially enjoyed staying up late to watch a good movie with a bowl of popcorn and a whole lot of butter. She was also a loyal fan of the San Antonio Spurs and the San Francisco 49ers.

Sofia leaves behind her only son, Juan J. Lara Jr.; her daughter-in-law, Nellie A. Lara; and her two beloved granddaughters, Julianna Kennedy Lara and Sophia Grace Lara. She is also survived by her siblings, Stella De La Garza, Pauline Jaques, Mary Ramirez, and Richard Alvarez, along with numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, and dear friends.

As a devout Catholic, Sofia believed in the promise of eternal life through Jesus Christ. Though she will be deeply missed, her family takes comfort in their faith and the hope that she now rests in God’s loving presence, reunited with the husband she shared so much
