Obituary

Sostenes S. Menchaca was called home by our Heavenly Father on June 3, 2024. Born on March 17, 1945, in San Buena Ventura, Coahuila, Mexico, to Sostenes Cardenas Menchaca and Hilda Sandoval Menchaca, he began a remarkable life journey. On October 1, 1954, his family immigrated to the United States and settled in San Antonio, Texas. Sostenes attended Burleson Elementary, Edgewood Jr. High, and Kennedy High School. While still in junior high, he persuaded his father to let him take on a newspaper delivery route. His father bought him a Moped scooter for his deliveries, which brought him immense joy and new friendships. In addition, he shined shoes and boots at Lackland Air Force Base for several years. Through a friend, he met Cleto, the owner of a big rig 18-wheeler, and began transporting Christmas trees across various states, including Canada. Sostenes moved to Michigan, embarking on a new chapter working with Cleto for several years, eventually becoming his personal assistant and chauffeur. He later worked in Lansing, Michigan, as a welder, specializing in large cargo engines. Returning to San Antonio, Sostenes joined AutoZone as a sales associate, where he learned about computers, car parts, and mechanics. He dedicated 28 years to AutoZone, retiring in 2011. Sostenes loved fishing, the outdoors, and animals, especially his last dog, "Guera", and his last cat, "PaPa". He enjoyed watching old western movies and Storage Wars, and had a passion for all sports, particularly wrestling. Sostenes is preceded in death by his father, Sostenes C. Menchaca; his mother, Hilda S. Menchaca; and his brother, Ernesto Menchaca. He will be greatly missed by his sister Martha (Marty) Menchaca Rivas (Richard); brother Javier Menchaca (Patricia Lourdes); sister Flo Marie Flippo Hopkins; numerous nieces and nephews, extended family, and friends.
