Obituary

Sylvia Mandujano-Hernandez, 71, entered into eternal rest surrounded by the warmth and love of her family on Friday, April 1, 2022.  She was born in San Antonio, Texas, on December 14, 1950.

Sylvia was immersed in the Christian community, her second family.  She was saved by our Lord and Savior and guided by her mentors, Pastor Freddy and Ninfa Garcia.  She was an avid learner, studying the word of God under the practice of the Victory Outreach ("Outcry in the Barrio").  She dearly loved her church, Metanoya, where she served for 43 years.  There was no job too big or small for her when it came to serving the ministry.  A devoted member of the Metanoya family, Sylvia developed a solid spiritual foundation.  Through the grace of God, Sylvia learned, grew, and fed her faith not only for herself but also for others.  She was a devoted mentor in the women's ministry at Metanoya and served as a porter at her church, where she loved and wore her red and black attire with pride.  She graciously volunteered in the church office, worked in the kitchen, and helped with the children's ministry.

After 25 years of employment, Sylvia retired from the San Antonio Marriott-Riverwalk.  Her colleagues missed her caring ways and infectious smile.

She loved her San Antonio Spurs!  On game days, Sylvia proudly wore her Spurs jersey, cheering them on as she watched them in action.

Sylvia's love for music expressed her joyful celebration of life.  A student at the Conjunto Heritage Tallér, Sylvia was taught by accordion instructor, Bene Medina.  Enthusiastic about learning how to play the accordion, Sylvia swiftly progressed in her studies, practicing and playing multiple tunes.  Blessed and thankful, the last song Sylvia learned was her favorite, "Amazing Grace".  The family is sincerely thankful to Rita Medina for the lessons, love, laughter, and company, and to Gavin Barrera, for his support and attention to the center as well as the students.

Sylvia is preceded in death by her parents, Herlinda Munoz Cruz and Henry Mandujano, husband, Oscar Hernandez, and her loving, gentle, pet poodle, Lucky.

Sylvia will be missed by her daughter, Rosalinda Cervantes, granddaughter, Carina Ariel Cervantes, sisters Norma Eika Cruz, Nancy Rodriguez, brothers, Ruben Cruz (Barbara and Iliana), Robert Cruz (Mary, Monica, Joaquin, and Max), Henry Mandujano (Lupe and Rico), Rudy Cruz (Janet, Rene, and Laura), Ray Cruz, extended family, and friends.

The family would like to express their sincere gratitude to Norma Eika Cruz for her unconditional devotion, support, and love for her sister, Sylvia, as she took care of her for an extended period of time.  A special thanks to Sylvia's best friend, Pat Senac, who without fail, visited every Friday afternoon to pray and sing with Sylvia. And to her dear friends, Sylvia Segundo, Velma Granado, and her Zoom Bible Worship virtual instructors, whom Sylvia loved abundantly.  Also, Georgina a big thank you for the friendship and the frequent visits in maintaining Sylvia's multiple hairstyles.  To cousins, Mingo, Velma, and Jaime, we cannot thank you enough for your big heart!

The family would also like to thank VITAS Healthcare for Hospice.  We have the utmost respect for the comfort and care provided for Sylvia by Chaplain Christopher, Nurse Marilyn Garcia, Nurse Joaquin, Case Manager, Julie.

A visitation will be held on Monday, April 11, 2022, at Castillo Funeral Home from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm with a prayer service to begin at 6:00 pm. A formal funeral procession will depart the funeral home on Tuesday, April 12, 2022, for a funeral service at 10:00 am at Metanoya Church with interment to follow at San Fernando II Cemetery.

2 Corinthians 5:1, "For we know that if our earthly house of this tabernacle were dissolved, we have a building of God, an house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens."
