Sylvia Marie
Ozuna
April 9, 1940 – April 6, 2023
Sylvia Marie Ozuna, beloved daughter, wife, mother, aunt, grandmother, and friend to all whose lives she touched, was called home to our Lord on April 6, 2023, at the age of 82. Born on April 9, 1940, to Rafaela and Arcadio Gonzalez in Rio Grande City, she was raised by her sister, Dora, and brother-in-law, Guillermo Jaramillo, in San Antonio, Texas where she attended Northside (Marshall) High School and San Antonio College. Her career began as a Division Manager at Sears in 1960 with a pause some years later to raise her growing family. She found the perfect balance between work and family at Northside and San Antonio Independent School Districts as a clerk and ultimately, a bilingual teacher's aid. She retired from SAISD in 2002.
Sylvia was a dedicated parent and parishioner, serving as a Cub Scout Den Mother, Religious Education Teacher, Pastoral Council Member, Senior Ministry chairperson, Altar Society Member, Guadalupañas Member, and Retreat Coordinator at St. Paul's Catholic Church. Her commitment extended to her community, and she was a founding member of the Sunshine Estates Neighborhood Association. Sylvia was a cancer survivor and volunteered for an experimental treatment in 1985 so that other women would benefit from the trials.
She was preceded in death by her parents and Mr. Guillermo, and Mrs. Dora Jaramillo. Her sisters Emilia Gonzalez and Gloria Arrambide also preceded her in death. She is survived by her loving husband of 65 years, Theodore E. Ozuna, children Leticia Ozuna (Sophia Parafina), Andrew Ozuna (Nancy), Patrick Ozuna (Lisa), and Ramona Davila (John), eleven grandchildren, sister Genoveva Sanchez and brother Dionel Gonzalez. Her nieces and nephews were also a special part of her life. Sylvia and Ted were awarded the "Lumin Gentium" by Archbishop Gustavo Garcia Siller in 2018 for their contributions to St. Paul Parish to bring Christ's light to all. She left a legacy of service beyond self and will be missed by all whose lives she touched.
