Obituary

Virginia C. Martinez Garza entered Heaven on February 14, 2022.  She passed away peacefully on Valentine's Day surrounded by her loving husband, daughters, and grandson at her side. She was born on January 23, 1947, to Estevan "Stephen" Segovia Martinez and Hortense Sifuentes Cadena.  Virginia was born and raised in San Antonio, with her San Antonio family roots going back to at least the 1860s.

Virginia graduated from Brackenridge High School in 1965. She met her future husband in high school when she was working with her mom at Atlantic Mills. They were married August 27, 1967, at St. Mary Magdalen's Catholic Church.

She enjoyed life to the fullest and was always in a great mood.  She never let anyone else's mood get her down.  Instead, she would always have words of encouragement for that person and look on the bright side of things.  She always had a positive demeanor and shared that outlook with everyone she encountered. She touched so many people's lives and not surprisingly had many friends, she was a social butterfly.  She always made sure that everyone was invited and included.  She made everyone feel special.  She was always caring and concerned for her extended family and friends and would do anything for them.  If she could brighten someone's day, give them a small gift, or just listen to them vent, she would.  She was the sweetest, most loving and giving person.  When she spoke with you, she truly listened to you and encouraged you.  Whatever you needed, she gave you what she had to give without question.  This gift of thoughtfulness and genuine care she gave to anyone she encountered was without equal.

She cherished spending time with her grandson Jonathan and mentioned that her fondest memories were when she lived with her daughter and son-in-law to help care for her grandson the first year after he was born.  Jonathan would visit his grandparents as often as possible with extended stays during the summers, holidays, and school breaks.  He enjoyed and loved visiting his grandparents, and they loved it too.

Virginia had many jobs, but her most important and rewarding was being a mother to her two girls and a housewife.  She was a seamstress and made outfits for her girls growing up, some of them matching, and also for her niece Julie.  She also made a wedding dress, numerous formal outfits for her daughters as well as other types of clothing and did alterations.  She worked at numerous part-time jobs and was even a crossing guard, part of the "Mama Patrol" at her daughters' elementary school.  She was a mother to all of those children too, because they would talk to her, and she would listen to them and encourage them as well.

Virginia enjoyed watching classic movies, eating a bowl of popcorn of course.  She enjoyed traveling and shopping.  One of her favorite things to do was to entertain and she always threw the best birthday parties for her daughters as well as barbeques and other casual get togethers.  She celebrated all of the holidays and instilled the importance of celebrating holidays and other events in her daughters' lives.  She would enjoy having family and friends over and going to their homes for parties, barbeques, etc.  She liked the occasional frozen margarita too.  She loved playing party games and would have prizes for the winners of loteria, and other games.  She made every event and life accomplishment special for everyone.

She was a devout Catholic and attended mass regularly.  She made friends as well at St. Mary Magdalen Church, her childhood church. She prayed for everyone everyday and prayed the rosary often as well.

Virginia is preceded in death by her parents, Stephen (1921-1969), and Hortense Martinez (1927-2011); Stepfather Felix Garcia (1911-1995); brother Ponce Ramiro (Sylvia) Aguilar Jr. (1944-2003); brother Stephen (Linda) Martinez Jr. (1951-1996).
